For years, colleagues in health tech asked if I’d ever see patients again. My answer was always the same: probably not. As I looked at new roles this year, almost everyone - headhunters and friends - saw me in a product leadership role or an outward facing CMO role. None were in operations or care delivery, areas I cared about but ones where I thought I’d become less relevant. So…always a zealot for breadth as much as depth, that’s what I went after. I took a job this summer with Carbon Health running and growing their clinics in Washington. And seeing patients. Was I nervous to see my first patient in years? You bet. After two days, though, it felt like I’d never left. Except that I approached patients with the perspective of a guy who’d spent a decade innovating — and learning from many of you — in health tech. Carbon has a huge appetite for great product and I was immediately struck by 3 things it had nailed: 1. AI Charting: Carbon started this before it became the household word it now is and rolled it out earlier this summer. As a product guy, I had limited expectations - but it’s astonishingly good. A complex conversation with a patient immediately turns into crisp but detailed clinician note. I show it to patients and we’re both stunned. 2. Engagement: Apps are ubiquitous in tech but engagement is usually dismal. At Carbon, I’d say 80% of my patients already have the Carbon app. Most of the remaining 20% will get it by the end of their visit with me. I send all discharge instructions and results this way and patients can easily text me on the app. Nobody abuses that functionality and I solve several problems a day for patients with it. 3. Insanely fast visits: the combination of AI charting and pushing lab results and discharge instructions to the patient’s phone means they don’t have to sit around waiting. A typical patient is amazed at how fast a visit is. We both are. This kind of effective tech use sets up clinicians for a great patient experience. On a typical day, the NPS for one of our clinics is 100. That’s right: 100. Despite this, there’s plenty to fix or improve. I’ll save that for another post.
